Introduction
Living a healthy lifestyle looks so easy on paper. A little exercise and a good diet – what more could there be to it?
But a healthy lifestyle encompasses so much more than exercise and diet. It is truly a lifestyle, a way to live life overall. It is the company one keeps, the way stress is handled, taking the time to take care of every aspect of one’s life.
Beware Stress
Stress is the silent killer of the healthy lifestyle. Some stress is necessary in life. And stress is not all bad, either. There is such a thing as good stress. Events like a new job or a new baby are examples of good stress. They are things you want in your life, but they bring on a good amount of change. Stress is the feeling of not being in control, and sometimes that is for pleasant reasons.
But a lack of control is usually an unpleasant feeling. Stress lurks everywhere – at work, at home, at play. The trick is to understand what is causing the stress and not letting it take over. Nothing kills the attempts of a healthy lifestyle like stress.
Take Stock in Every Aspect of Life
To live a healthy lifestyle, one must examine the way life is being lived now. That means stepping back and seeing how bad habits can be improved and answering certain questions seriously. How often do you work out? What are your eating habits like? Do you drink, smoke or use drugs? How are your relationships with your family? Do you have friends? Do you take time out for yourself? What is your emotional health like? Your mental health? Your spiritual health?
These are the types of questions one must ask. Then, with honest answers, the quest for a healthy lifestyle can begin.
It cannot happen all at once. To have a healthy body, it helps to get a regular workout schedule, and perhaps find a workout buddy. Study the new food pyramid and restructure the diet. Decide which friends are good to have around and which ones are toxic. Take time out to enjoy life and all its goodness.
Those are the types of things that will eliminate stress. And a life with minimal stress is a healthy life. |
